Tooth Extractions in Our Lafayette Office

Tooth Extractions Are Safe

Your experience with tooth extractions may only go as far as getting your wisdom teeth removed, and this is the most common tooth extraction procedure. But, if you have never gotten a tooth extracted it’s important to note that it’s a low-risk procedure that is relatively painless. The recovery process after a tooth extraction is oftentimes very simple.

Sage Dental Care can perform some extractions in any of our two locations, but in some situations, we may refer you to an oral surgeon.

Reasons For Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are the most common reason for getting a tooth extraction procedure and are typically handled by an oral surgeon. Oftentimes, wisdom teeth are impacted and it stops your teeth from growing normally.

In some cases, a dentist may recommend an extraction to make room in the mouth for proper tooth alignment. A tooth might need to be extracted when it is badly damaged or decayed. In these cases, an extraction will prevent infection and relieve pain.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Tooth extraction is a quick and painless process that should only take a few minutes. Most extraction processes look similar to this:

  1. After taking x-rays, the dentist or oral surgeon will review them with you and talk through the entire process with you.
  2. The dentist will use a local numbing agent for the tooth, gum, and bone.
  3. Throughout the extraction, you should only feel pressure and no pain.
  4. In most cases, the dentist can remove the tooth using applied pressure, rather than surgical intervention.

The Recovery Process

After the procedure is over, your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for the extraction sites properly in the following hours and days. Some patients may need to cover the area with gauze.

For those who experience pain after their extraction, the dentist or oral surgeon may prescribe medicine to give provide some relief. The gums should fully heal in a matter of weeks, as long as the site is kept clean. Once healed you may be interested in replacing the missing tooth with an implant, bridge, or denture.
